Caping for Shoulder Mounts

Getting your buck mounted? Add caping to your drop-off. The cape comes off for your taxidermist while the rest of the deer gets cut to your sheet.

Before You Drop Off

Protect the Cape

A good mount starts in the woods. A few habits keep the cape in shape for your taxidermist.

  1. 01

    Book It with Your Deer

Check the caping add-on on that deer’s cut sheet when you book. It shows up on your drop tag so nothing gets missed.

  2. 02

Field Dress with the Mount in Mind

Keep your field-dressing cut low, below the brisket, and avoid cutting into the chest, neck or throat. Those are the parts your taxidermist needs.

  3. 03

Skip the Drag Strap on the Neck

Rope and drag marks rub hair off the cape. Drag by the legs or antlers, or use a sled or cart.

  4. 04

    Keep It Cool

Get the deer cooled down and in at your drop-off time. Fresh, cold capes are the easiest to work with.
